Started in the Bronx by pioneers like DJ Kool Herc, rap music was part of an embryonic culture that also involved breakdancing and graffiti. In 1973, DJ Kool Herc brought the sound system parties of his native Jamaica to New York City. Herc began playing in the Bronx during which he would isolate the funkiest parts of soul and funk songs, basically inventing the break. In 1974, Grandmaster Flash invented modern hip-hop DJing. In 1975, DJ Grand Wizard Theodore somewhat accidentally invented scratching. In 1977, the legendary Rock Steady Crew, a group of breakdancers and overall hip-hop apostles, formed. Hip-Hop was a way for the troubled youth of the Bronx to channel their energy in a positive way. in 1974, Africa Bambaataa formed the Zulu Nation to keep the peace among gangs and promote hip-hop culture
