Muntele Rushmore

S-a decis ca in Muntele Rushmore vor fi sculptati patru presedinti ai Statelor Unite ale Americii care jucasera un rol important in istoria sa. Primul presedinte sculptat a fost George Washington, acesta fiind primul din stanga, in cadrul sculpturilor.

Urmatorul presedinte sculptat a fost Thomas Jefferson, care se afla in dreapta lui George Washington. Acesta a fost cel care a creat Declaratia de Independenta.

Al treilea presedinte sculptat in Muntele Rushmore a fost Abraham Lincoln. Sculptura sa se poate vedea in partea dreapta, in capat. Acesta a fost ales presedinte in anul 1860, iar anul urmator a izbucnit razboiul civil dintre Nord si Sud. Abraham Lincoln este cunoscut in special pentru emiterea Proclamatiei de Emancipare si pentru contributia sa la cel de-al 13-lea Amendament, care a abolit definitiv sclavia in Statele Unite ale Americii. La scurt timp dupa incheierea razboiului, Lincoln a fost asasinat.

Ultima sculptura din Muntele Rushmore il infatiseaza pe presedintele Theodore Roosevelt, acesta aflandu-se intre Washington si Lincoln. Presedintele Roosevelt este cunoscut pentru terminarea constructiei Canalului Panama si pentru negocierea sfarsitului razboiului dintre rusi si japonezi, pentru care a obtinut Premiul Nobel pentru Pace.

La începutul secolului trecut existau nu mai puţin de 23 de monarhii europene, cărora li se adăugau Irlanda şi Malta, aflate încă la acea dată sub tutela Marii Britanii.
O sută de ani mai târziu, în Europa au mai rămas doar şapte regate. Este vorba de Belgia, Danemarca, Olanda, Norvegia, Spania, Suedia şi Marea Britanie
