Il film, terzo capitolo dell'omonima saga prodotta dalla Pixar, vede Andy, ormai un ragazzo di 17 anni, in partenza per il college.
Ancora emotivamente legato ai suoi compagni di gioco, tra i quali Woody (voce originale di Tom Hanks, voce italiana di Fabrizio Frizzi), Buzz Lightyear (voce originale di Tim Allen, voce italiana di Massimo Dapporto) e Jessie, il ragazzo deve prendere una difficile decisione: cosa fare dei suoi vecchi amati giocattoli. Andy decide di conservarli tutti in soffitta, ad eccezione del suo amato cowboy Woody che vuole portare con sé al college.
Per un terribile malinteso il sacco in cui il ragazzo aveva riposto i suoi pupazzi viene scambiato per quello dei rifiuti.
