Il vecchio Borgen, che possiede in Danimarca una ricca fattoria, ha tre figli: Mikkel, sposato con Inger, Johannes e Andersen. Degli altri due figlioli di Borgen, Mikkel è ateo e resiste ai tentativi della moglie, che vorrebbe ricondurlo alla fede; Johannes si è talmente immerso negli studi teologici che è stato colpito da una mania religiosa e si crede Gesù Cristo stesso. Inger, che aspettava un bambino, muore di parto.
