Ce lundi 23 février, le monde du blues célèbre l’anniversaire de Johnny Winter, figure majeure du blues électrique et passeur essentiel entre tradition et modernité. Né en 1944 au Texas, le guitariste à la chevelure blanche a consacré sa vie à défendre une musique viscérale, brute, profondément enracinée dans l’histoire afro-américaine.
Un Texan façonné par le blues

Né à Beaumont, Johnny Winter grandit dans une famille où la musique est omniprésente. Atteint d’albinisme, il apprend très tôt la guitare aux côtés de son frère, le multi-instrumentiste Edgar Winter.

Adolescent, il se nourrit du Delta blues et du Chicago blues, fasciné par des géants comme Muddy Waters et B.B. King. De ces influences, il gardera un sens aigu du feeling et une approche incandescente de la guitare slide.
1968 : la révélation

En 1968, un article du magazine Rolling Stone le propulse au rang de sensation nationale. Il signe dans la foulée avec Columbia Records un contrat estimé à 600 000 dollars, un montant exceptionnel à l’époque.

Son album Johnny Winter (1969) confirme le phénomène. Sur scène, son jeu de guitare fulgurant, sa voix éraillée et son énergie sauvage imposent une signature sonore unique. À la croisée du blues traditionnel et du rock, Johnny Winter devient l’un des grands architectes du blues-rock moderne.
Le gardien de la flamme

Dans les années 1970, il ne se contente pas de briller en solo. Il produit plusieurs albums pour son idole Muddy Waters, dont Hard Again, contribuant à relancer la carrière du maître du Chicago blues. L’album obtient un Grammy Award et marque un retour triomphal aux sources du blues électrique.

Winter ne trahira jamais cette musique. Même lorsque le rock devient plus commercial, il reste fidèle à une approche organique, viscérale, presque militante du blues.
Une vie sur la route

Jusqu’à la fin, Johnny Winter demeure un homme de scène. Le 16 juillet 2014, il s’éteint à Zurich, deux jours après son ultime concert au Cahors Blues Festival. Il avait 70 ans.
Un héritage toujours vivant

En ce 23 février, son anniversaire rappelle que Johnny Winter n’était pas seulement un virtuose : il était un passeur de mémoire, un artisan du son, un musicien qui jouait chaque note comme si elle était la dernière.

Plus qu’un guitariste, il fut une conscience du blues.
Et tant que résonnera une guitare slide saturée d’émotion, l’esprit de Johnny Winter continuera de brûler dans le cœur du blues électrique.
