The Mercenary Air Force of Ashran is not the kind of military life someone enters willingly. Once you're in, there are only three ways out: serve for three years (in a place as dangerous as Ashran, that's almost a miracle), earn $1,500,000 (an almost impossible sum to acquire), or defect (and face the terrible consequences if you're caught).

Young Kazama Shin seemed to have it all: a bright pilot career ahead of him and the favor of Ryoko, the daughter of the president of Yamato Airlines. But an ambitious rival got him drunk and tricked him into signing what could prove to be his death sentence: a stint in the Ashran Mercenary Air Force!

Now, Shin flies over one of the most dangerous areas in the world. It's simply known as Zone 88. Now tied to his fate, Shin is forced to learn to fight, to kill, just to survive the next day. The sky turns into an aerial hell as Shin fights for his freedom alongside many other pilots who found themselves in the air force for various reasons. Many will never return. Will Shin be one of those unlucky ones?
