La dolce e imbranata sedicenne Ruby Gillman cerca disperatamente di integrarsi alla Oceanside High, ma si sente invisibile.  Ruby non può frequentare i ragazzi più fighi della spiaggia perché la sua supermamma iperprotettiva le ha proibito a di avvicinarsi all’acqua. Ma quando Ruby infrange la regola n. 1 di sua madre, scoprirà di essere una discendente diretta delle regine guerriere Kraken e di essere destinata a ereditare il trono della nonna, la Regina Guerriera dei Sette Mari. I Kraken hanno giurato di proteggere gli oceani dalle vanitose e ambiziose sirene che combattono contro i Kraken da eoni. C’è però un grosso e inatteso, problema: la bella e popolare nuova ragazza della scuola, Chelsea è proprio una sirena. Ruby dovrà alla fine accettare chi è e affrontare grandi imprese per proteggere chi ama di più.
