Auteur, compositeur, guitariste, interprète et acteur, Kris Kristofferson a marqué la country de son empreinte indélébile en lui fournissant quelques uns de ses plus grands succès, « Me and Bobby McGee » ou « Help Me Make It Through the Night », et de ses plus beaux albums, notamment Kristofferson (1970). En 1985, le « hors-la loi country » se joint à ses pairs Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson et Waylon Jennings au sein des Highwaymen. En 2009, il publie son vingtième album, Closer to the Bone.


Kris Kristofferson est né le 22 juin 1936 à Brownsville (Texas). Fils d'un général de l'U.S. Air Force aux origines suédoises, le jeune homme est destiné à servir dans l'armée comme ses aïeux. Etudiant en Californie puis à Oxford, en Grande-Bretagne, il préfère la littérature et la chanson, et forme son premier groupe en 1965.

Installé à Nashville et travaillant pour le label Columbia, Kristofferson fait la rencontre de Johnny Cash qui l'incite à proposer et interpréter ses chansons. Le conseil ne tarde pas à être suivi de faits. En 1967, il sort le single « Golden Idol » et ses compositions sont chantées par Jerry Lee Lewis (« One More With Feeling ») et Ray Stevens (« Sunday Mornin' Comes »).

Chanteur hors la loi
Inauguré par Roger Miller, le titre « Me and Bobby McGee » devient un grand succès lorsque Kristofferson l'inclut à son premier et magnifique album, Kristofferson (1970). Janis Joplin reprend aussitôt le morceau sur Pearl, tandis que le « King » Elvis Presley choisit « Help Me Make It Through the Night ». Sa carrière est lancée.

Au cours de la décennie 1970, Kristofferson fait naturellement parti des chanteur « hors la loi » (outlaws) rénovateurs de la country en compagnie de Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson et Waylon Jennings. Il publie quelques albums à succès : The Silver Tongued Devil and I (1971), Jesus Was a Capricorn (1973), Who's to Bless and Who's to Blame (1976) et Songs of Kristofferson (1977). Il épouse la chanteuse Rita Coolidge en 1973 (leur album Full Moon sort la même année).

Cinéma, honneurs et chansons
Son physique athlétique fait de lui une star de cinéma. Kristofferson tourne aux côtés de Bob Dylan dans Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973) de Sam Peckinpah, et A Star Is Born (Une étoile est née) avec Barbra Streisand d'où découle un disque du même nom et pour lequel il est récompensé d'un Golden Globe en 1976. Il jouera entre autres dans La Porte du paradis (1977) de Michael Cimino, Lone Star (1996) et La Planète des singes (2001) de Tim Burton.

En 1985, Kristofferson s'asoccie à Cash, Nelson et Jennings au sein de The Highwaymen. Le quartette sort trois beaux albums en 1985, 1990 et 1995. En solo, il réalise un album politiquement engagé, Repossessed (1986, avec « They Killed Him » en hommage à Jésus Christ, Gandhi et Martin Luther King). Entre son intronisation au Songwriters Hall of Fame en 1985 et au Country Music Hall of Fame en 2004, Kristofferson s'illustre avec les albums A Moment of Forever (1995) et The Austin Sessions (1999).

En 2006 sort This Old Road sur son nouveau label New West, suivi par Closer to the Bone en 2009.
