John Carter, cercatore d'oro ed ex soldato sudista, fuggendo dagli indiani e dall'esercito statunitense incappa in una figura misteriosa, uccisa la quale viene involontariamente teletrasportato su Marte, dove la diversa gravità gli conferisce forza e agilità superiori a tutte le diverse specie abitanti il pianeta.
