Vocalist Jennifer Madsen teams up with pianist and arranger Brent Edstrom to deliver fresh and creative reads of American Standards on this album with Clipper Anderson/b, Mark Ivester/dr and a couple guests. Her voice is flexible enough to fit all of the retrofits, warm around Sean Jones’ trumpet and Edstrom’s ivory on a modal read of “Body and Soul”, while going Broadway emotive with her partner on a pleading duet of “Someone To Watch Over Me”. She’s slinky and sly on “Mean to Me” and gets funky when Edstrom switches to keys on a soulful “I (Who Have Nothing ).” Howard Levy adds some breezy harmonica to a lovely “Beyond the Sea” and Anderson lays down a rich pulse as Madsen waltzes through “Willow Weep For Me”.
